Yeah, we're nuts on the tvbarn2 mailing list, but it's very high signal and little noise. I'd suggest, however that you grab a gmail account if you do join as it does the best job at sorting the threads. If anyone needs an invite for gmail, email me.

Come...join...buy the next round.

At this point in the game, if anyone needs an invite for GMail, they really ought to get a couple of friends. :)

I guess I'll show my technological ignorance here...and ask...what is Gmail, and why would someone want it?

Of course, I thought ICQ was the premiere instant messenger until May 2004....

I really think Gmail is now open to anyone.
(and for the person who asked it's Google's free e-mail)

Not the case, but there are so many unused invites out there (I myself have 99), that you would really have to make a concerted effort (or be Zach Horan) to be so disliked that nobody would give you one.

(So if anyone here DOES need one, contact me off-list with an email address where I should send the invite to, I'd be happy to hook you up.)

(Gmail is Google's Web-based email service. It's like Hotmail, but free, allows you two gig of space, has more features, and is not owned by Microsoft, which is important to some people.)

And cause I'm a nice guy, Zach, if Mr. Lemon won't give you one, I will. Just because it's spring.

Actually, I appear to have been the lucky recipient of a random Gmail invite that appears every now or then on the main Google site. It'll say something like "Get Gmail!" below the search bar.

And if you have Yahoo Mail, or Hotmail, or some other free email provider, go to Gmail. Trust me, you'll like it! I've got 50 invites to burn, I can hook you up if you don't have it already.

Among other things, they have free POP service, which means you can send and receive your Gmail in a regular email program like Outlook Express or Thunderbird without even going to your browser.

And the best news of all is that the 2 GB storage space gradually increases every day; right now, mine's at 2.106 GB.

It almost seems to increase as one watches it..

ObGameShow: If GOOGLE were a puzzle on Wheel, spinning $5,000 and guessing G would net you $10,000.

Can you in fact send through it as well? When I set it up initially (and thank you for mentioning this...I've recently restaged my machine and forgot to reinstall my Gmail accounts into Outlook) I thought you could receive your mail into your Outlook mailbox, but I wasn't sure if it would allow outgoing mail through their servers. I suppose it makes sense that it would, upon retrospect...
Casey Buck
You indeed can!

Thou hast a point, but I think a lot of people just don't see the advantages of Gmail if they haven't tried it or have kept their ear to the tech tracks.

Agreed entirely. By "needs an invite" I meant "doesn't already know someone who can hook them up with one." :)

I'd've thought Greed would be the better ObGameShow, what with the storage space inching upward from 2 GB. *shrug*

What the hell do you do with 2 GB of email storage space?

'Twould be nice if GMail filtered out, say, the PayPal phishing messages from Caracas, Venezuela I've been receiving at AOL.

The 2+ GB is so you never have to throw out e-mail again.

Gmail has a good spam filter. In my 4 months with Gmail, I've seen a total of one spam message hit my inbox.

Once upon a time the same thing was said about hard drive space. I'm sure there's a fair amount of file swapping going on through Gmail. There's a file size limit, but that can be cirumvented by chopping the files up.
