For about the first half of the first season, it was done live. Later, recorded versions were played while the band was showing playing live. Besides it's only 16 bars repeated over and over. :)

Sorry to shift topics, but I didn't want to start a new thread: Has anyone ever noticed that this theme is a total ripoff of "I Got Rhythm?"

I knew it was something, but I thought it was a ripoff of a song called "I Love Music." (not the O-Jays song)
