Nell Carter (1948): Late singer and actress who enjoyed sitcom success when she starred on "Gimme a Break" from 1981-87. Carter began her career in theatre, and garnered both a Tony Award and an Obie Award for her performance in "Ain’t Misbehavin." After her stint on Broadway, Carter spent most of the ‘80s in television, and joined the cast of shows like "You Take the Kids" and "Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper," when "Gimme A Break" ended. Carter later played Miss Hannigan in a revival of the musical "Annie," and appeared in the television movies "The Proprietor" (1996) and "Sealed with a Kiss" in 1999. She died in 2003.
