Full Version: Anyone hear from 'Millionaire'?

hey guys and gals:

I am getting a little annoyed because I sent my information to Millionaire via their website; I picked an audition date and submitted my info. I did this like in the first week that you could do it.

I got the auto response from them, where they said they received my request for an Aug 18th audition and that I would receive an audition packet to fill out in my snail mail...but then they also said that not everyone who submits and audition request will get to audition (or get an application packet, I guess).

Has anyone received the packet in the mail? Or heard from Millionaire? I am just annoyed because I sent in my request so quickly, plus I am from Indiana, and I know they want more people who are not from the NYC area. But I haven't heard from them.

What gives? They keep advertising for people to audition for their new season, but they don't respond. Or did I just misunderstand the email? I thought from the way it sounded that the auto-response wasn't a confirmation from them, and that I'd have to get an application in the snail mail to go to the audition.

Has anyone received anything from Millionaire? I'm just trying to figure out what to do. If I don't receive anything from them, should I just got to a taping? If I do that and I get there on time, am I guaranteed an audition (able to take the test)?

I'm just a bit confused, that's all...and I'm hoping someone here has some experience/info to give me. I DID think it was odd that they'd send us application packets to fill out, considering a lot of people who fill them out wouldn't pass the test....

Thoughts/comments? PLEASE. :)

They have been very bad this season in sending out confirmation e-mails. Just go down there anyday and you should have no problem getting in to audition. I did not have a confirmation e-mail and had no trouble attending. Also, they usually don't send out e-mails until a week before the audition if they will at all.
BrentW
So, even though they didn't send me an application packet as they said they would, I should just drive the 10 hour trip and show up anyway? I feel very uneasy about that.

Would it be a better bet to attend an audience taping, knowing that they "guarantee" that if you show up on time, you get to audition, even if you can't get into the taping?

I guess I just don't understand why they say they will send out application packets in the snail mail for you to bring, when from what I understand about the normal process, you have to pass a written test before they'll even take a look at you.

Anyone else's thoughts are greatly appreciated. (and thanks to goongas!) :)

Well, I'm going to be in New York in September and put in a ticket request for Sept. 17 on the site. I haven't heard back from them yet.
Steve McClellan
To my knowledge, no one who's put in for an audition later than Aug. 5 has heard anything since the original acknowledgment. I've never heard of anything received via snail mail. A friend had an audition a few weeks ago, and just got an e-mail with documentation to be filled out attached (the same one I got last season).

If the Friday before your selected audition date passes, you can reregister (although in your case it'd probably be too late) or put in for tickets. Given the concerns you've expressed, I recommend the latter.

Thanks for the info...I registered a coupla times but heard nothing, so I assumed that my name hadn't been chosen. However, rest assured, I won't make that same mistake again w/my latest audition. :-)

Hey there:

Again, thanks for the responses (and keep 'em coming!). I have a free ticket (from getting bumped) that I can use to go for my "scheduled" audition for the 18th, and I can stay with a friend while there. I just want to make sure that I wouldn't walk up to the studio and get flat out turned away. I don't think that would happen, especially since I registered for it a while back. I just want to make sure if I go that I'm given the chance. :)

I am excited about auditioning because this is like the one show where you can get an auditon. I've been trying to get an audition for WOF for a few years...how many postcards do you have to send them before you get picked? LOL. :)

-Brent

PS: EDITED TO ADD: So the documentation/application packet they send via email as an attachment to be printed out and filled out? That would make more sense. By the way, it's says you have to bring proof of age and residency. Is a driver's license OK (of course I'll bring more than that)? They mean proof of residency where you live street wise, or that you're a resident/citizen of the USA? Sorry for the ignoramus questions. I am just trying to make sure I don't hit a snag during this process.

goongas
I know of somone who has come from California this season and have not been rejected and they did not get a second confirmation e-mail. I know of no one that has been rejected. The materials they send you are e-mailed to you, and if you don't get them, they let you fill them out there (I can e-mail the forms to you if you want me to).

When you have an audience ticket, you are not guaranteed admission, since they overbook the audience. Last season I know of someone that was turned away from a syndicated taping. It is highly unlikely it would happen, but it could.

A license is ok, but in all the times I have auditioned (at least six times), they have never asked to see any ID.

BTW, I got a postcard yesterday saying I was not admitted to the contestant pool.

I guess there's no chance that "Millionaire" will ever go back to the phone game again (except for "Super Millionaire" - if it comes back)? I just thought it worked better with the phone game.

Well, that sucks. Why do you think that happened? Is interviewing one-on-one not your strong point? I know the Meredith version tends to look for photogenic, articulate, entertaining type of folks. I remember someone on this board like 6 months ago or so complaining that all the guys on there were gay (considering I am, I thought I'd then have a good shot..LOL).

Well, I'm sorry about that. I know how I was when I thought my "H2" audition went so well, and then they never called. If you have comments about what happened during your intereview, we'd like to hear. If you don't want to talk about it though, we'd understand. :)

Keep your chin up...Maybe Super Millionaire will come back and you can qualify via the phone game.

Not as long as there's no Ring of Fire on the syndie version or as long as they tape the entire season in a compressed period of time.

Not all in one year. I auditioned for a special edition once with Chuck D., another time I was in the audience watching a friend and auditioned there (I wasn't going to). Plus I live about 40 minutes from NYC, so it is not a big inconvenience. But, I am done auditioning for this year.

Neither am I, and I got on! :)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the #1 thing to do before you audition is to fill out that form with the most interesting things about yourself that can be said on TV, in the most interesting way possible.

Yes folks, with enough spinning, even *you* can be made to look interesting! :)

Well, I suppose I should say I ASSUME this. I think it's a safe assumption to think they want more than contestant after contestant who has a name like "Joe Blow, New York, New York". I'm not dissing on the NYC people..I'd like to be ONE. :) But I have heard various producers and hosts say that they like to have a cross section of America, that includes race, sex, orientation, income and yes, locale.

Somebody back me up on this. :)

Anyhow, can I ask something of goongas? Did you show up just whenever at the ABC building, or did you register online and then, even though you didn't receive anything, show up at that time. I registered for Aug 18, but if I can show up whenever, I'll show up whenever. :) In other words, when you show up, do they check your name against a list of people who are supposed to be there, or do they just say "mozy on in, folks." :)

Brent

BTW, Good luck with your audition :-)

OK, just wondering. I know, I like NYC (one of my favorite places), but that does not mean I want to see contestant after contestant from there (or from any one place for that matter).

FYI, I took the test and passed 2 years ago and I received the post card saying I was in the pool, but I never got called. I live in Seattle, but I have NYC area roots. If I had known they were gonna emphasize NYC I would have made more of my roots, but I was assuming myself that they would want geographic diversity so I did not mention it.

I think I am going to do an audience audition later this fall.

I didn't get any info either -- and now it sounds like I might not be able to make the trip and may have to make other vacation plans next month.

I guess I still could think of their "Walk In and Win" promotion, but I get the feeling they may even be screening on the basis of provided information (profession, etc.).

I just walked in without signing up for that particular day.

I think you aren't. Once you're in the pool, you're in there for good and can't audition again. (Unless it was the nighttime show whose test you passed.)

Hey there:

I just thought I'd give everyone an update. My partner is in NYC this week, and I made him go to the Millionaire auditions. He is the smartest person I personally know, and he is very personable, so I figured he would have a great shot of getting on.

He went to the Monday audition, from 5-8PM, although it didn't take that long. Indeed, as many of you said, even though he hadn't signed up on the Internet for that day, and even though he hadn't gotten a pakcet in the mail for the day he DID sign up for, they didn't seem to care. He got in line at 4:15, and they came thru and asked what his name was, checked for it on a list. It wasn't on there so they just added it. They also handed him a packet to fill out; some people in line had received theirs in the snail mail, other got it via email, but the majority didn't have it. So they handed everyone a packet who didn't have one.

He said there were about 300 people there, give or take. At 5PM, they were led into the building, into what looked to be a school cafeteria, with the round tables and chairs and what-not. Passed out a test (everyone had the same test), and they said for those who passed, they would be asked to stay around and interview. You have 10 minutes for the 30 question test. My partner said it was harder than he thought it would be..lots of arcane pop culture stuff, but he felt he did reasonably well. 20 people passed the test, and the LAST number (they give you a number) they called to say "you passed" was him. He said he let out a big "whoo!" and went up there.

He said he had a great interview. He talked to the guy for about 12 minutes; he said that next to him, he saw the next interviewer talk to about 3 different people in that same time period. So this guy intereviewing him spent a good deal of time chatting it up, and my partner said he felt very good about it. They had good chemistry. So, he'll get a postcard one way or another in a few weeks.

A few fun facts: of the 20 people who passed, only 4 were women. Also, my partner said that there was a guy who was at his table who had passed the test last year, but evidently didn't do well in interview because they said he didn't make it into the pool. Apparently he was a little bitter about it. My partner said to me that if he was a producer, HE wouldn't put that guy on TV either. LOL. Totally unentertaining-- apparently seemed like he thought he was ENTITLED to be on the show. What a yutz.

I take my audition in two weeks. I'm also going to audition for the Celebrity Scoop thing. you can apparently do both in the same day. They do the general audition from 5-6, and the Celeb one from 6:45 to 8.

So in sum, the good news is: you can go whenever, and you'll get to audition. The bad news is: the test is harder than we thought, although many people in the world are not as smart as the people on this board, so I think we all have a good chance.

I think that's everything...I could post some questions that they had on the test, but I am sure that they will change the test every day...If i think of anything else, I'll post. :)

Thank you very much for the great report, Brent. It is very much appreciated. :) I plan on going for an audition and had certain concerns. (That you addressed.)

Specifically, I was feeling a little uneasy about showing up even if I didn't hear from Millionaire, but now I feel that it will be fine. I have signed up several times, and have never heard back from them with the forms to fill out yet.

Good luck at your audition! What exact date are you going to be there? Currently I'm planning on the 16th. Hopefully we'll both end up being in the group of people whose names are called because we've passed the test!

Hey pyrawoman!!!!

Email me at: brentwolgamott@aol.com

I say this because I am getting into town on the 15th (a Sunday), and i am going to audition on the 16th (like you), because on Mondays and Tuesdays you can audition for the regular show and then the Celebrity Scoop show afterwards. I will go back and try as many times as they let me. I know I can pass the Celeb Scoop one..I hope so, at least.

We could meet somewhere and go together. I am going to try for both the general and Celebrity Scoop. I think Celebrity Scoop is one thing that you could kind of study for. Read a lot of People magazine, US Weekly, and read E! Online and Variety.

If you want, email me so we can meet and go together...always more fun to audition when you're not alone. And it makes no difference that we are friendly to each other...if we pass the test(s), we get interviewed, likely with different people. (I know at some places, i.e. The Price is Right, if you are with some "people", they will only pick one person from your group; at Millionaire, it doesn't matter)

Now I can hope that they'll start responding to ticket requests--I put in by their web site for a taping on Sept. 17 (and of course I'll take the test afterwards) last month and haven't heard from them yet.

(And if I wake up early enough to get in the standby line for Regis and Kelly and go see "The Frogs" that night, I can spend a whole day in New York on the Upper West Side.)
takinover
I was going to do an audience audition, but I changed my mind and I signed up for August 17th's audition. I said what the heck and decided to go in on the 9th without signing up. I had a really bad feeling going in and I was dreading the worst. I was dreading the test and the interview. I felt so bad, I almost postponed it until the 10th, but I said the heck with it and did it anyway.

I was afraid of the test having heard people say that it is harder than in the past. I also question how could that be since most of the people who said that passed. To all those who said it now I know how. I went through the test once answering those that I was sure of. When I went through it a second time I left 8-9 unanswered and I had absolutely no fricking clue on 3 girly type questions. I made my guesses but I resigned myself to the possibilty that I was going to have to go again the next day or two to retake the written test.

After grading them they called me 1/3 of the way through. I counted 16 people passing out of 99 who took the test. There were 99 test takers because one person sat down with the test takers who was not going to take the test when they moved him, they did not add another person. I believe that I was the only person under 30 who passed, but that is a naked eye assessment.

I was totally jacked up that I passed and I carried that into the interview. I was so jacked up that I had to keep myself from interrupting the interviewer. I think I had a good interview, though I was worried on some points.

I received another postcard that said that I was in the pool on Friday and today I got the phone call to tape on September 7.

Now I got lots of preparing to do.

Congratulations!

The best piece of advice I can give you is this: take your time. Once you're in the hotseat, it's all about you. Don't rush. Don't worry about the other contestants in the green room. Don't worry about any rustling in the studio audience. Take all the time you need to read the question and the choices completely, make sure you understand the question, and really think before you use a lifeline. If an answer seems obvious at the $8,000 level or earlier, it probably is-- they're not trying to trick you on the early questions.

Good luck!

Since I was the one who started this thread, I thought I'd let you know my experience, now that it's over -- at least this portion of it.

My experience was similar to 'takinover''s (the above poster). However, I took the test on Monday and didn't pass (and the Celebrity Scoop at that!). I was depressed. The worst part was I handed it in thinking I DID pass, or at least felt reasonably comfortable.

Came home, bitched to anyone who would basically listen. Then, in my gloom and doom, suddenly remembered that I was meeting Pyrawoman (who posted in this thread) at the Celeb auditions. Called her afterwards, and she had passed (I distinctly remember her "whoo!" when she did). She had realized who I was, but after the fact. She gave me some encouragement and just told me to calm down and try again. She really cheered me up.

I did try the General test yesterday (the day I had originally signed up on the Internet to take the test in the first place), and PASSED. Couldn't believe i passed the General Test and not the Celeb one. A gay man who knows more about the real world than celebrity gossip...I guess somewhere there is a snowball in hell. :)

Anyhow, my interviewer was tres cute, and we talked for a long time, at least comparable to everyone else I saw. I probably chatted for about 8-9 minutes. We had a great rapport (edited to spell correctly...thank you!). I thanked him, and now I can seriously say:

win or lose, I'm happy, because I passed the bloody test. Called Pyrawoman to thank her, and I have done all I can do. My interview could not have gone better. If it's not meant to be, then Wheel must be waiting around the corner. :)

When I get a postcard (either way) I'll post, as well as a phone call if I ever get one. Much love to all that helped. I SERIOUSLY could not have done it without you. I was hesitant to come here (NYC) without some encouragement from folks on here. So here, here! :)

Congratulations to BOTH of us, Brent! (And to you too, takinover.) I am very glad and proud that you persisted and went back and did so well. It was natural to be supportive because I truly did believe you would pass if you kept trying. And you did!

I passed the celebrity test on Monday and had an interview... didn't last all that long, maybe about three minutes, and they said I will get a postcard in the mail in a few weeks. Wish me luck!

I'm back from Las Vegas, but had no Internet access there to post so:

My roommate called me in Vegas on Monday to tell me I got the "congratulations!" postcard. Woo-hoo! It was, as happened to poster 'takin over' above in this thread, sent out immediately. I interviewed on Tuesday and got the postcard the following Monday -- 5 mailing days. :)

I will say that I wouldn't put much stock into thinking if you don't receive a postcard immediately that you're doomed. I don't know exactly how it all works, but my postcard was handwritten (the address that is), and the writing looked to be the same as my interviewer (he wrote during the interview). So, if the interviewers are on their own little time table, some might be high-speed, and some might just wait till the end of the month to send them all out. Again this is speculation...I don't know if the interviewer has the final say if you're in the pool, or if he goes over it with a 'higher up' who determines.

Anyways, I got it, so when I get my tape date, of course I'll post.

Congratulations Brent!

Here's a question (for anyone who might know the answer) - if time runs out and you haven't been called for that day, what happens? Are you the first contestant the next day, or are you sent home?

Thanks,

Hey Brent!!!

I'm so happy for you!!! Now aren't you glad you didn't give up after not passing the test on your first try?? :)

Anyway, I haven't heard anything myself yet. I'm thinking what you said about the timing is probably correct. Plus in my circumstances there is the issue of them only needing 10-15 people or so for the Celebrity edition, and there two more days left for people to try out for it at the end of September. Perhaps they are planning on waiting to see who they have to choose from then before they send out the Celeb edition postcards. (I certainly hope this is not the case, though!)

Is there anyone out there who has auditioned for the Celeb edition (or knows anyone who has) who has heard one way or the other?

Pyrawoman
BrentW
The answer (or at least as much as I could gather) can be found at Section 4-A here:

http://www.millionairetv.com/rules.html

which states, among other things:

from MillionaireTv.com:

"...Any Contestant who did not play the Game on their scheduled Tape Date will be rescheduled to play on the next scheduled Tape Date for a standard Syndicated Program ("Unplayed Contestant")."

(and I'm hoping I did the quoting thing correctly; please advise if I erred)

So, I am SPECULATING that if you were the unlucky contestant (or two) that didn't make it into the Hot Seat, Davies and Co. might help you out with lodging (if you could stay in town and they were taping again very soon). If it were a week or so away, maybe they would fly you back at their expense, since you did your part and were there, willing and able when you were supposed to be the first time.

Then again, it DOES explicitly say on the site that YOU are responsible for ALL expenses (travel, lodging, etc). It does NOT explicitly say that they wouldn't help you out if you were unlucky enough to have done everything you were supposed to, and they still didn't put you on (if you were an "Unplayed Contestant";) all it guarantees is that you would be scheduled for the very next Standard Tape Date. That is, assuming you weren't even more unlucky, and they had a "Special Theme" week in between (i.e.: "Celeb Scoop Week" (which our very own "PyraWoman" (who posts here) is going to be on; I am SURE, girl!), "Couples Getting Married Week", "Zero Dollars Week", etc).

Perhaps some of the people on the board here can answer this poster's question with some certainty (instead of my logical speculation), as well as how often Millionaire tapes per week (and how many shows they tape per day). I am sure someone can answer that.

All this to say: you have to admit: if you were lucky enough to be on the show (as we all would like to be), it would be a nice problem to have. I personally would like to be towards the end, because you make friends with the other contestants in the green room, and it would be fun to root them on, and see how everything works. Assuming you don't "LLAMA OUT" in the first five question, you've got a guaranteed freaking $1,000 in your future. Besides, if it was me, I would just take the opportunity to see more Broadway shows.

Last thing: they might do it so the folks who are potential contestants from NYC or NJ would be placed towards the end of the roster of contestants so that it would be easier for them to come back -- rather than the poor housewife/student/senior citizen who's from west of the Mississippi who had to move a few mountains to get there in the first place. The folks at the show seem to be a classy bunch -- I can't imagine they wouldn't have some empathy for situations like that, and it would be a drop in the bucket for Davies help a contestant who was in this position. But perhaps they have to randomly draw for your order.....

So, in sum:

1) Who knows how much Millionaire tapes per week?
2) How many shows are taped per day?
3) Does Millionaire help out if you're an Unplayed Contestant?
4) How is the order of contestants determined on a given tape date?
and lastly:
5) Who has gotten a postcard since the show's been running, and how long did it take folks to get the positive (congratulations) postcard, and how long did it take folks who got the " thanks, but no thanks" postcard. There seem to be a wide variation among people.

Sorry so long... :)
Brent "My middle name is $32,0000" W.
.......MINIMUM! :) (hopefully)

Thanks Brent.

I spose my overall question was "if the klaxon goes before you're on, do you still get to play at some point." And I guess the answer is yes, which is a good thing :-)

Hey FireStar....er....Pyrawoman! (aside: FireStar, along with IceMan, was one of SpiderMan's "Amazing Friends" back in the 80's Saturday morning cartoons. She was kickass, by the way... ;)

Back on topic: I would also tell you that I DID overhear a test-taker, at the Celeb audition that we (Pyrawoman and I) were at, ask a question. This is the audition where P-woman passed, and I failed (though I passed the general test the next day). ;)

She (the woman I overheard) asked the blond guy giving instructions when they were planning on taping/scheduling the Celeb Scoop week. I did hear him say that they were tentatively going to have the tapings for it in November, for the February sweeps period. He also did say that they were, ironically, having a meeting about when to schedule the Celeb stuff later on that day. He made sure to say though that it could be sooner -- that's what the meeting was about that day. So don't take the November tape date thing to the bank. They could still tape in October for November sweeps....

HOWEVER it happens though, it's not as urgent as the regular stuff, timetable wise for them. Whereas poster 'takinover' got his card in 5 days and his phone call a few days later, HE is taping on September 7th. I also got my postcard quickly, because they are lining up folks for all the general tapings. So, as you can see, this is obviously the most pressing issue for them right now -- not Celeb week. Plus, since it will be a sweeps stunt, they are going to probably be a bit more exacting about who they want, as opposed to the standard shows. Celeb Week, is a bit more "fun" in nature, so they REALLY want the 'creme de la creme' for it. I personally think you're a shoo-in, P-woman, because you and I talked about how your interview went, and you had TONS of energy. However, others who passed along side you might be marginal in the personality and 'celeb-crazy' departments, so I DO believe that they want to see all the ponies that are in the running before they can make a final decision about who to give a gate number at the Derby. ;) There are a finite number they can schedule for Celeb Week, whereas the general folks (like me) can be stockpiled, because they know they have a huge amount of shows to fill.

The good news, as you said, is the Celeb auditions are over this coming week by Tuesday, so it's likely you will receive your postcard the following week (after Labor Day). :) You'll make it!!!!!! :) Remeber though: even though it might be a slight downside having to wait till the Celeb auditions are over, to me it's HUGE if you make, because it does narrow down the trivia-cramming playing field quite a bit. There are celeb trivia websites galore, and I do think, if you are determined as I know you are (Pyrawoman), you'll leave no stone unturned to prepare as much as possible by studying a lot of Celeb-related bizness. :)

Love,

Actually, the remaining dates are at the *end* of September, the 27th and 28th.

.......MINIMUM! :) (hopefully)

Or $25,000, as the case may be...

That's very odd; I didn't see that before. And why are they taking a full month break in between dates. I mean they have dates for the end of August, then nothing till the end of September...and even then, those dates are for like 3 hours long.

Well, at any rate, Pyrawoman, among others who passed the Celeb test, will find out before then anyway, because they did affirm that they will be sending out postcards WITHIN 4 weeks. She took her test on August 16, so she should hear by Sept. 13, maximum.

They tape four episodes per day. Not sure how many tape days per week. Contestant order is determined randomly. And I wouldn't count on them helping you out with extra travel expenses, since the rules explicitly state that they're the contestant's responsibility.

If you're going to tape the show, you may want to plan for the longest possible stay. Assuming you're not scheduled for the last tape day of the week, that would be 2 nights and an evening return flight on the 3rd day. If you're on the last tape day of the week, plan to be there for the weekend just in case.

Please also remember that getting a "good" postcard doesn't guarantee that you'll get called to be on the show. In my case, I just barely squeezed in on the last 2 tape days of the season. Others might be less lucky.

Thanks Peter! Yes it does explicitly state, as others have mentioned, on the postcard that you're not GUARANTEED a spot, etc. But, I'm feeling a lot better about my chances than if I got the "bad" postcard! :) LOL Besides, the guy who was running the show at the audition was asked that question, and he said while it doesn't guarantee you, you have a *very* good chance. He said it in such a way that anyone who got the posty should feel reasonably good. Besides, once you're in the pool, you're always in, so if it was this year or next year...I'm just happy I made it this far. I remember what it felt like the previous day when I didn't pass the Celeb test. Argh. :)

I am cautiously optimistic. :)

I will say that I wouldn't put much stock into thinking if you don't receive a postcard immediately that you're doomed.

All the evidence I have seen on another Internet board suggests the opposite. Only people that have gotten a "good" PC got it almost immediately (within a week). Also, if your interview goes long, it seems they are at least somewhat interested in you.

G-man:

So could you be a bit more vague about what other board you are referring to? :) LOL. Just kidding. But seriously, what other board are you talking about -- we'd all like to know. ;)

I would normally agree with your theory, but my partner interviewed for about 8-9 minutes (long by Millionaire standards from what I saw), and he has heard nothing (good or bad). His 4 weeks are up this Tuesday, so he should get SOMETHING by then.

Plus, our very own Pyrawoman interviewed for Celeb Week, and her interview was longer-than-average, and she is *very* energetic, and photogenic. It must be taken into account that they have a finite amount of slots for Celeb Scoop, so they are being a little more careful about who they choose for that week.

Finally, let's just be a bit more positive until some people at least get SOME news. No sense trying to fulfill a doomsday prophecy, when in actuality none of us knows what's going on behind the scenes. And i don't say that to be sh-tty...I hope it doesn't come off that way.
