Merv Griffin, the creator and executive producer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, is 79 today.
His previous claim to fame was being the writer of the standard "I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts".

Think about it...if he didn't have a talk show on NBC in the early 60s, maybe he wouldn't have created J!. (Per The Jeopardy! Book, part of his severance package was to create game show pilots.)
I have to do this: Oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh.

You know....I had never heard of that song before I seen The Lion King back in 1994....and it just intrigued me to no end once I found out that it was a real song and it was Merv that wrote it.

Merv did not write the song. Fred Heatherton wrote it. Merv, however, did affect the fluty British accent and sing the song with Freddy Martin and his orchestra, for a big hit back in 1950. He also came to hate the recording because he didn't think it represented his singing voice well at all.
