Here's the news story (I'm assuming more of an obit will be written as time goes by):

Tony Randall Dead at 84

His accomplishments pretty much speak for themselves, and we know about his litany of game show appearances (some good, others not so good). He'll be missed.

I'm waiting now for the Perfessor's litany about how he's the first of the ten in his beloved "Six Decade club" to pass away. RIP Tony. I suspect we can forget GSN doing a game show tribute to him at this point.

Had I known his time was near, I'd have gone to see him and TTTT's Kitty Carlisle in "Love Letters" performed here in town when I had the chance. : (((

RIP, Tony.

I didn't think he'd live to see his daughter's graduation anyway. That would be pushing it. (She's 7, BTW)

Aside from that, from the few things I've seen Tony in, he did a mighty fine job.

Tony Randall was my favorite Pyramid player of the '70s era shows....

Stuffings in little bottles of pills, anyone?
Robair
One of the best memories I have of Randall is that more than any other game show guest, he could totally flummox a host and take him out of the game. We all know he turned "Password Plus" upside down in his only week on the show, but I remember a "$20,000 Pyramid" incident.

Dick was chatting with Tony between games, and he innocently asked him what was the most important thing about playing the game. Without missing a beat, Tony said "You never say -- "

They never showed what you never say because they had to edit it out. Cut to raucous applause and laughter, and Dick doubled over almost unable to continue.

But as much as he was an enfant terrible, he was also sharp on culture and the arts, on both sides of the proscenium. He used $5 words all the time, but what do you expect from a million dollar guy?

Tony was very generous to game show fans, from back in the WML days to his recent Squares appearances, and I'm not alone in saying he is going to be missed.

Amen to that...aside from his work in The Odd Couple and elsewhere, he truly left some classic moments in GS history (the aforementioned $20K Pyramid "stuffings in little bottles of pills" being one), and he'll be sorely missed for sure.

Godspeed, Tony...you left behind a legion of fans, and every last one of them will always remember you and the laughter you brought into their lives.

I enjoyed the $20K Pyramid that GSN showed in its Vertivision block about 18 months ago where he and Dick Cavett were playing the WC for charity. The top box was "THINGS YOU HATE". Cavett gave clues like "War", and "Racism", and Randall replied, "The German national character!". Hilarious, and I'm of German descent. :-)

And let us not forget the not one, but 2 "Odd Couple" episodes devoted to the ABC game shows "Let's Make A Deal" and "Password", in which Oscar & Felix were contestants on.

And always remember...Aristophanes is RIDICULOUS!

Sad to hear about his death. It's been a rough few months for legends of comedy...Tony, Alan King, Jack Paar....

Tony was a guy I would have LOVED to have had a conversation with....though I doubt I could keep up with all of the nickel words!

One of my favorite Tony Randall movies is "Hello Down There" (1969), about a family (and the kids band friends) living in an underwater house.

This movie featured a future star named Richard Dreyfuss (Let It Ride; another favorite of mine) & a game show king who was a talk show host @ the time, Merv Griffin!

TVL will air an "Odd Couple" marathon in tribute to Mr. Randall Thursday night from 9 p.m. to midnight ET, including the "Password" and "LMAD" eps.

A&E will repeat their "Biography" of Mr. Randall tomorrow night in the usual time slots.

We were very lucky to have Mr. Randall's talent on this earth for as long as we did--he will be missed.

That's not right... TV Land has the episodes airing Thursday night from 9-12, not Wednesday.

I remember Tony Randall's guest appearance on SNL, during a "Mr. Short Term Memory" sketch. Mr. STM appears on a game show, and Randall was his celeb partner. At the end, Randall gets fed up and says "Oh yeah, sir, you are supposed to get on a plane and go somewhere very VERY far away."

You'd think it was funnier if you saw it.

And of course, let's not discount the "Bjorn Borg" incident from $50,000 Pyramid. "Bjorn...Baker! Bjorn...Bergenson! Bjorn! Whatever his name is!"

My love thoughts and prayers go out to Tony's family. I know how our family felt and still feel todaywhen Raymond passed. May god be with you because I am sure Tony is watching over you all.

This is a true shame. I've seen most of Tony's work well after it was originally produced, but he's definitely one of my favorite celebrities. I love The Odd Couple, and he's one of my favorite WML panelists, too. He'll be sorely missed.

Oh, this is a heartbreaker...

Tony was hilarious on the Odd Couple, as well as the lesser-known Love, Sidney. I've never seen the Tony Randall show, but I'm sure It also was something impressive. He was an actor that could always express the proper emotion at the proper time. His impeccable timing is probably what he was best known for, along with the "ahhh....Martin..."

My co-workers in TV and I were talking about Tony after news of his death crossed the wires.

Our weather anchor instantly recalled that week of P+ -- especially with the Password puzzle with "family" as the first item in the puzzle. Tony's guess of "Carlton E. Morse" still has me in stitches.

Thanks for the memories, Tony. You will be missed.

Although I haven't seen much of his work outside of game shows, the work I have seen of Randall's was extraordinary.

I think that uncamark said it best, though...

two quotes from Tony Randall:

I'm a slob, but no one will believe it.

If (Jack Klugman) finds a horse who can sing opera, we'll have something to talk about.

Just a reminder to those tuning in on GSN this weekend:

During its Black & White Overnight feature on Saturday/Sunday, they'll air his initial appearance on a game show from the 9/56 episode of "What's My Line?".

Which means all of those appearances on "Password" and "Pyramid," among others, were chopped liver. :)

Yup. I first heard of it over the radio.

I'm sure that, somewhere in The Great Beyond, Jack Lemmon, the original Felix, is giving Tony a pat on the back and a handshake for a job well done.

To absent friends...

Actually, Art Carney was the original Felix, in the Broadway play. Still, the same sentiments could apply.

But Jack played Felix in the "Odd Couple" movies. In fact, the last one was in 1998.

Yes, but that still doesn't make him the original Felix.
