Here's an email web1000 sent me:

We regret to inform you that hosting for pageoclips.web1000.com has
been discontinued for violation of our terms of service.

Your site is being used for the storage of files that your
site does not link to, or that are being hot-linked from
html pages not stored on our servers. Please note that
our terms of service require that for every 500 kilobytes
of content downloaded from your site, a visitor must
view at least one html page.

So somehow, somewhere, my files were being hotlinked by someone.

Grrrr. >_<

Well at least I know that bandwidth was not the issue at all.

I hope not. It sounds to me like you might have been in violation the other way...I, for one, could go to your page once and download 10 megs worth of video easily, which is 20x their bandwidth ratio requirements.

If, however, you WERE being hotlinked, let me be the first to raise the official GS Forum Middle Finger to that particular idiot.

When you mean by HOTLinked, do you mean remotely-linked?
Jimmy Fiono Coyne
Yes, my files were apparently being remote linked elsewhere.
Incidentally, I caught someone on the GSN Message boards directly linking each GS Turkey's pilot in a post to the board. I had to change the filenames and you may recall that I put a notice advising people not to hotlink my files.

Well if bandwidth isn't the problem...who knows? Maybe I'll rescind my declaration of the site's demise for a second time.

Maybe.

Then again, probably not. I've already pretty much buried it. So we'll just leave it for a long while.

Jamie--if you ever do bring it back--let me give you some advice--don't tell the posters on GSN.

To expand on what clemon says, perhaps if you were to create a separate page for each file (I know, no one really wants that), you would have gotten around that asinine one html page per 500k downloaded rule.

Yes. Someone else on their own web pages (may have) made a direct link to Jamie's files, instead of copying them and carring them on their own server, with their own bandwidth. Such a thing is a MAJOR no-no in the Web world. As a rule it's frowned upon to hotlink someone else's GRAPHICS, much less a video clip. If you want to link to the page, that's usually something else again, but you NEVER directly link to someone else's page elements.

(As a rule, if you want to use ANYTHING from someone else's page in your own content, it's considered polite to ask the owner first.)

Maybe. I dunno if even that would have done it, on a 3-4 meg clip. You'd need to go like eight pages deep for each clip to make quota.
