Full Version: [Sort of OT] - Does anyone have TV Guides from March of 1967?

...but if your ABC affiliate was faithful to the network feed, that'll also work.

My question is regarding the series "Where the Action Is" (ABC, weekday afternoons). I'd like to know a) if it's listed as being in color, and b) if you have guides from (probably late) March, is there any mention of a couple of shows having been taped in Hawaii?

I wish I had local research facilities for this sort of question...

(Obligatory game show info: Jack Carter was appearing on both the "Hollywood Squares" and "Dream Girl" during the week of April 8, 1967.)

Nothing about the show being in color that month. The show supposedly ended on March 31, to be replaced by "The Dating Game" which was moving from mornings to make way for "One in a Million." Would the 1967 strike have forced reruns to air before and beyond the scheduled end date? The EVOTVGS says OiaM didn't get on the air until April 10. It was supposed to have started on April 3.

Quick clarification, while TDG was scheduled to move to afternoons, it did not directly replace "Action." It appears that that time went back to local stations.

Yeah, I have the TVG from April 8th, and it shows that our local affiliate had reruns of "The Millionaire" in the former "Action" time slot.

Wesley Hyatt's book on daytime TV says that Action ended on 3/31, with no mention of reruns.

He also says One in a Million premiered on April 10th, but my Detroit TVG for that week lists the show with no mention of it being the debut. Back then, that would be unusual.

My Iowa edition (don't ask) TVGs make no mention of Action being in color, or of any trip to Hawaii. Kevin, what suggested to you that possibility?

A person on another board has dropped the bombshell that a huge lot of musical performances form the 60s that were previously though to be wiped are in the process of being transferred. As a side note, he also mentioned two "WTAI" shows that were color shows, and were taped in Hawaii. My industry contacts said this was impossible, as the show was produced in B/W, and that (incidentally) the chances of Dick Clark springing for a Hawaii junket for the cast and crew were pretty much slim to none.

So I wanted to see if ABC had upgraded the show to color by 1967. My early Sept. of 1966 TVG showed it as being B/W, and the next issue I had was from the week after it was canceled.

And, I know there were two earlier "Shindig!" shows that were done in Hawaii, but I wanted to check on WTAI. The info was that the Hawaii shows were some of the last that were assembled for the series.

This source is also intimating that a large number of "Tonight Show" clips are in this batch-- including Lennon & McCartney's infamous 1968 appearance with guest host Joe Garagiola... in COLOR. Supposedly, this material was all saved because it was recorded on some arcane video format, back in the 60s. I'm still investigating, but I think I'm going to need a lot more convincing before I buy this story.

Oh-- and by the way, thanks for the info, Jimmy!! (and you too, Fearless Leader!)

All right-- I have to take this part back-- I just found photos on Mark Lindsay's website that show WTAI being taped in Hawaii.

There was a later (68-69) Paul Revere/Mark Lindsay/Keith Alison daytime show on ABC called "(It's) Happening" which was in color.

For any of the equipment fiends who have checked out that picture on Lindsay's website... is that a color ABC video camera from station KHVH that's pictured? Or is possible to tell from a side view like that?

Apparently this was the time of the technician's strike, the one that Walter Cronkite famously honored the picket line. Because of this, both One in a Million and Snap Judgment had their premieres delayed one week from April 3 to April 10. This was probably too late to be reflect in TVGuide.

Still can't find a darn thing on Where the Action Is.

I have all the TVGuides from that time, but the show is never listed as being in color. According to what I've read over the years, ABC had to be dragged kicking and screaming into color for its primetime shows, and many daytime shows were left in black and white far longer than the other networks. In fact, daytime reruns of Bewitched and Fugitive remained in B&W right up until late '69, even when rerunning color shows. They didn't switch to all-color in daytime until January 1970.

Because my issues are from different areas, there is one week where it's not listed at all in the issue I have; but in the ones I do have, the listings don't specifically mention it was from Hawaii.

Also, according to the listings, it was cancelled on March 31, 1967; but if the replacement shows were delayed a week, it's likely that a week of reruns were aired the following week.

Hope that helps! :)

In what appears to be a complete (though interesting) coincidence, a CD collection of sixties rock, featuring plenty of acts also seen on the variety show, is being released with the title Where the Action Is.
