How many mics had Jim used during the course of the run of the original Card Sharks?

I seem also to recall that he used an ElectroVoice 635-A microphone at some point. Is this true?

And was the handle on his ECM-51 black or silver or both? If both, why? Plus was the telescopic part ever silver?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

The larger mics were Shure SM61s--not 635As.

IIRC, there were 4 different styles: Silver ECM51, black ECM51, silver SM61, and black SM61. The black was probably painted on by NBC. [SM61s and ECM51s weren't available that way from the manufacturers].

They may have put a piece of black shrink tubing around the telescoping part of the ECM-51 to keep it from telescoping. The telescoping action flexed the wires inside the tube and caused the connections to break.

While we're on the subject of mics... anyone know what kind of mic Bert Convy has in the following clip?

If this doesn't out me as a mic geek, I don't know what will.

That's a Shure SM60.

I believe Ametron in Hollywood has an SM60 SM59 in a display case for sale (Ametron is NOT the home of low prices, BTW). I was hoping they would still have an E-V RE55 for sale but alas, no, so I'll have to content myself with my 655C:

except mine has an unfinished hemispherical grille which looks like this:

I recently added a Sony ECM-53FP to my collection so now I can get schnockered and do my Brett Somers impersonation.

Not an SM60 but an SM59:

Interesting that they went from an omni (SM61) to a cardioid (SM59) on Tattletales.

What's the difference between the Sony ECM-51, and ECM-41 pictured here?: http://www.coutant.org/sonyscan/ecm-53fp.pdf

They are both similar to the ECM-31. The difference with the 31 is that the head is bigger. Perhaps the same can be said about the 41 to the 51?
chris319
The 41 is unidirectional; the 51 is omnidirectional.

Drat it. You be right. I mixed up the numbers. It was either that or the 60. And I have the SM59 spec sheet on my hard drive!!!

I have built a replica of an ECM-51. It works, meets professional standards, and is fairly simple to build, making it a fairly easy do-it-yourself project. Pictures and construction details to follow. Unfortunately the expensive part is the windscreen. Sony still makes them in black so you have to mask it and paint the wire mesh silver.

Hello again.

Excuse me if I must ask this question again, but did Jim Perry's ECM-51 Microphone sometimes have a silver handle, even though the telescopic part was painted black, and the other way around for when the telescopic part was silver and the handle black? I think I could say the same for Gene Rayburn's microphone on Match Game back in the day when his ECM-51 was short as the handle was sometimes silver yet sometimes black.

Again, thank you for your time.
