That much is true.
I'll speculate, too.
The new format gives you MORE playing time in each of the rounds, which means it's easier to follow the contestants, particularly the champion. As much as I like the "tournament" format, you barely get started with a round before it's over--particularly the Letters round. The race-to-100 points round seems more exciting than a timed game; nobody loses just because time runs out.
It seems likelier that ratings were not high and the changes were an effort to build some excitement about the game. Unfortunately, NYSI is not a game you can play along with while you're doing other things--trust me, I've tried while doing chores around the house--so it was never going to find the same audience "Match Game" or "Gambit" (or even "Price") did.
