I'll admit to inflating my actual shipping prices a bit, because I do regularly order shipping supplies like new boxes, bubble wrap, and bubble mailers, and I pay for a monthly charge for time-saving shipping software (Endicia), and that stuff is 100% not cheap. I'm past the point of being able to salvage that stuff from work, etc.
But all of that is completely reasonable, because you're recouping actual expenses. Even a little on the top of THAT to compensate for your time? No problem.

Something like a Playstation-box size game gets tossed in a Priority Mail flat rate mailer for $4.60, and I charge $5 for shipping something like that.
Sure. And it can be done cheaper, if you wanted, and if I were your buyer I'd be fine with it. Bubble mailer is a buck. First-class mail is another two or so. That's reasonable packing and shipping to me.

Those little $7's here and there add up quickly for sellers, many of whom see it as a way to neutralize eBay's fees on their business/hobby.
It's doing a little more than neutralizing when they're tacking an extra $7 onto a $25 used video game sale.

(When faced with the gut-wrenching task of buying a cell phone whatsit on eBay, like a car adapter or something, all those sellers charge $8 for something they ship first-class for 78 cents. That's the worst.)
Yep. When I do that, first I find the best combined price. Then, if there is a tie, I go with the vendor more honest about their shipping costs. It's not 79 cents for that cellphone case and then $6 for shipping, it's $6.79 for a cellphone case, shipped.

eBay is said to be revising fee structures soon, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see something that addresses their shipping problems.
I would love to see that, but I'm not holding my breath, because I think Ebay has decided that it's better for their overall bottom line to stay broken about this if it means concealing the breakage on other things that work out in their favor.

I've actually had good success lately selling items with free shipping, FWIW, and will probably continue to use that as a positive tool.
Yeah, the couple times I've sold things on eBay, I've done that, and either set the reserve or Buy It Now price appropriately.
