Though not exactly based on an original game show, today at my local Kmart store, I found a new electronic tabletop version of 20Q by Radica. It's designed to be played by up to four people, and the copies I found had a sticker on the box, promoting the "New Game Show," on GSN.

Here's a link to what it looks like, from amazon.com:

Was in Toys R Us and saw these two new IT items:

Wheel of Fortune Tabletop - $29.99 - This just looks bad. The screen is tiny, and the wheel (while colored correctly compared to the renders), still has just the tacky '$' on each space. The stylus is pointless (no pun intended), because the 'touch screen' is just small buttons. This should start clearancing quick - and while I'm interested in how it plays, I'm not going to drop $30 on it. Fun fact, the back acutally says "Easy to read with large LCD screen!". This COULD have been a handheld game, 90% of the game (the wheel assembly) is just fluff.

Deal or No Deal 4th Season Tabletop - $23.99 - It's the tabletop with the Deal Wheel! It looks just like the renders. It still shows the stupid non-rounded bids. However, I do like the look much more than the first edition, and do like the fact that it's priced cheaper. If I wasn't so sick of Deal, I might actually pick this up. I do find it funny that the game is so bland, they have to start including the 'gimmicks' on the home versions too.

Couple heads ups:

I found the MDP Board Game at Target on clearance tonight for about $8. It's a "Target Exclusive Edition" and features "60% more Password rounds".

I also found that Meijer has many of their Jakks Plug N Play games on clearance for $9.99. No TPiR but I picked up WoF 2nd Edition at that price. I saw Jeopardy! too but passed on it.

Prices may not be the exact same in your area but in most cases the same items are on clearance across the board and the prices are usually somewhat similar.

I'm thinking (and really hope) those are just preliminary placeholder graphics. They're looking way too generic. Plus, I imagine they'll go with just "2010" rather than "2010 Edition". Then again, Ludia might not have a marketing/design department, or someone there thought that was a good idea.
chad1m
I thought they looked fine, especially since there was nothing super special about the first edition's art either.

I thought that too. The possibility of that being the case is actually pretty high, though at the same time the art on the first TPiR Wii was no great shakes either, and so this could be the direction Ubisoft is taking with these titles. (Let's face it: these are not triple-A titles, and so Ubisoft is not going to throw a lot of resources at the package art.)

Let's also be realistic. What's going to grab someone's eye while going down the video game aisle of your store of choice--a less boring cover with contestants and/or hosts on the packaging or the name of the show taking up 60% of the front packaging? If I'm Ludia/Ubisoft, grabbing the buyer's attention with the names of franchises which have been successful for 30+ years each is significantly more important than "Hey Bob, should front cover of the TPiR game have a cartoon contestant playing Plinko or spinning the Showcase wheel?"
nate80s
On Sunday, I bought the TPiR Jakks Pacific game. While it is fun, it is not compatible with adaptor that was made for previous TV Games. What a bummer! So be warned. If you buy this game, be sure to pick up 4 AA's.

Same goes for the last Family Feud game's box art, with generic contestants and host.

The boxes aren't that bad at all. Big show logo, and using a familiar show detail as a background. Minus the 2010, I would possibly use either as a computer wallpaper.

As long as the content is fine, I don't care. Hey, we've seen worse.

(No offense intended in my editing of original post!)

I haven't seen the actual games myself at TRU, however they've added the items to their website, and the images look better than what I saw from prototype packages IMHO:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3458590

I like how the WOF game is called "Pass 'N Play," instead of "Platinum" edition, since iToys has never released an electronic WOF game before. (Wonder if they'll try to produce a new Jeopardy! electronic game?)

Bob,

That is NOT the one I saw/now own. Mine in the full size one with the big wheel. This looks the same but with a smaller wheel.

Have they canned the larger one allready?

At least the wheel does spin! This looks like it will be as much fun as the TV Play-Along game from the late 80s. Why oh why must iToys do such a crappy job on designing games? I want Tiger Toys back lol!

P.S. I think both versions shown do look identical.

Huh? On the Pass N Play the screen is on the Right, on the Tabletop version the screen is on the Left. The tabletop has full size spin/buy/solve buttons, and the pass n play doesn't. It's the exact same game, just the size of the wheel is different.

I'll be posting a full review later, but the game is actually fairly good - and all aspects of Wheel are represented. Not nearly as terrible as I thought.

Now that I take a good look at the two, there are differences! The new Pass N' Play looks like a cake and should not retail for $29.99

MORE than worth it. Of course hardcore fans like ourselves will see discrepancies between the game and the actual show, but if you're looking to play Price on the go, there really is no better choice at the moment.

This caught my eye--"Ships from and sold by The Last Place You Look." At that price, that will be the last place I look.

I saw it at Toys R Us last night. I spun the wheel, thought it was clever. Then I remembered the last thing I need right now is more *ahem* "crap" to move to the new place, and $30 of crap at that.

DeepDiscount.com is offering up an assortment of DVD Game Shows for relatively cheap, with free shipping. The real discount, though, comes by entering "23017" at checkout, which knocks another 50% off the price.

Karn Feud - $6.44
Match Game - $8.18

Newlywed Game - $6.77
Password - $6.77
TPIR 1st Edition - $7.93

Oh, and just because, here's Madden '95 and NHL '95 in a Plug-N-Play for $4.68.

Picked up the Million Dollar Password PC game at Best Buy. Got through the first stage and reached the $50K level. I unlocked a few things, including a new celeb. My CG partner was the retired rock star. It's a fun game that makes you think. The CG Regis looks a little creepy, IMO.

While I was at Target today, I saw both the new Deal or No Deal ($24.99) and Wheel of Fortune ($29.99) tabletops. As I love Wheel more, the Deal or No Deal game actually looks more fun. In all honesty, I think now would be a good time for iToys to stop making game show games as it disappoints a lot of its customers. If only Tiger would come back into the picture.

Yeah, because when I'm considering a Press Your Luck home game, the first thing I think about is how many questions it'll have.

You have to give them credit, though. Generally, with a party game like this, the goal is to give the players about thirty games worth of content. PYL uses precisely eight questions per game, so this should be good for over 300 plays. That's really not bad at all, assuming the rest of the presentation is passable. I admit I'm a little interested in the DS game.

Just FYI: The iPhone version of Millionaire just added an extra 100 questions. Free update if you already own.

In the "old news" dept., I picked a new copy of Merv Griffin's Crosswords on amazon.com for 74 cents, plus S&H. Bought it this morning, got a notice two hours later saying it's being shipped.

Plus, I made it to the $100k level of the MDP PC game.

Sony recently announced that the PSP, come October, will debut PSP Minis, which will be small, App Store/ XBLA type games for the system. No word on if they work on PS3 or not, but I'm guessing we could possibly see portable versions of Wheel and J! for the PSP when the next game cycle comes around.

Wasn't their excuse something to the extent of, "Well, we're porting the crap out of this, so it saves us money to just have the same crap across the board in terms of avatars?" As lame as it is, I suppose it makes sense. I don't know how much effort is extra in developing a Mii system, but it's gotta be enough for a small company to say, "we're not going to do this extra bit."

As for the Miis...the game is not exclusive to the Wii, so we developed an avatar system to match all of our releases. The thing to note with Miis as well is that they really don't match the visual style of the game, are not as expressive and are limited in what they can accomplish, whereas our avatars are full-body avatars with limbs that are fully animated. I personally very much prefer our avatar system than the Miis.

Financially, it does. Financially it also makes sense to outsource your coding to Eastern Europe, too, despite the completely crap results that come out of it. It's still a shiatty excuse and tells me they're not interested in making a quality product.

(That said, Nintendo's third-party dev support has always been the laughingstock of the video game industry, so if Ludia can't figure out how the Mii API works, they're likely not going to get a lot of help where they should, either. Nintendo isn't completely blameless in this.)

Nice spin. Other crapware shovelers have tried the same spin, and nobody bought it there either.

That said, the guy knows his audience. Price fanb0is and Tomarkenites would buy these things if the characters were stick figures, so why spend dev cycles making them, you know, good?

Reading the rules on that preview image, it appears the gameplay is based on the DVD game. Which means that it pretty much has nothing to do with the actual show, and has no chance of separating me from my money. The bingo element is completely absent. I understand that this is a rather difficult game to translate to a home version, but there have been bingo home games for 70+ years. Print off a few Lingo cards with 10 spots already marked off, include a die-cut piece of cardboard with number, stopper, and question mark circles, and there you go.

That's a way to approach it. It drives me nuts when a home game, doesn't include all the format elements from the actual show. (i.e. Lingo without the bingo.)

Pretty much this. The excuse of "we're porting the crap out of this" doesn't work, especially when there are third party publishers like Activision allowing Miis (and now 360 Avatars) into freakin' Guitar Hero. It's just a poor excuse.

In addition to the trio of Ubisoft titles to be released over the next 6 weeks, a third edition of 5th Grader will be hitting stores in October. Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?: Game Time will be released for the Wii, 360, and DS the last week of October, the same time as PYL's release.

No bingo in Lingo, eh? I agree...that's not right. Then all you have is a new version of Jotto. I did pretty much what you said, Sodboy, with my home version. Dry-erase board, two pre-set bingo cards, numbered & question-marked chips. Not a problem at all. Why not just put together a rule sheet with two ways to play - like tv or a just-solve-the-word game?
