Well, less than an hour after my last post, I went to the Endless Games site, to see if any new info on their forthcoming Deluxe Fourth Edition of Family Feud. No luck on that, however here's something new:

While sifting through the list of DS games which will be available in the near future at GameStop, I found
this oddly titled entry, to be released in October. IGN has a complete name for it--
Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? Make the Grade! Further searching showed that this game will be released for the DS, the PS2, and the Wii. GameStop has prices of $20 on the DS and PS2 games, and $30 on the Wii game.

I've bitched about how absolutely terrible DSI is on my website. The question then, is: how much, on average, is a license for a game show worth? It's gotta be worth a small fortune, but maybe I can finally go legit and show the world that someone can make a decent game show game.

I disagree. Wheel and Jeopardy! for the old school systems isn't worth the $5 or $8 Nintendo would want for them. I might pay $8 for the Sega Genesis Jeopardy!, but I'd want material that's more current than from my senior year of high school. Will I get newer material for my $8? Heck no.
I'm holding out a smidgen of hope for 1 vs. 100 for the DS, which will be released in a week and a half. DSI absolutely cannot do worse than the "Case 21 always holds the $1M" clustermuck known as Deal or No Deal for the DS.

But that's the thing: they can't do *worse*, no. But they're gonna have to do one hell of a lot better for 1 vs. 100 to be worth buying, because even *without* the Case 21 flaw, DoND was still a festering pile of shite. That bug was just the icing on a giant fecal cake.

Just picked up the Password travel tin at B&N, and I strongly recommend getting one. It is the full 5th Edition in a smaller, metal box - scoring wheel and all. Giant score pad, too - I think it's about 100 pages. And while the box is compact, it's still big enough to hold 4 editions' worth of cards, and two Lightning Round decks (though I can't seem to quite get the sand timer in there.)
And just for comparison's sake, I still have the 25th Edition I got in grade school, around 1988. It was $6.99. This is three bucks more, twenty years later.
Oh, and for those with an interest in such matters, it reads in bold, right in the front of the instruction sheet: "Cards in the 5th Edition are numbered 87-111 (A&B)." The cards are also perforated, in sheets of five.

We suspect that, but until the game actually ships or until someone from Ludia wants to confirm that positively (which isn't outside of the realm of possibility since that rep from Ludia has posted at G-R and they've almost certainly been asking the same questions - and I don't read G-R, so maybe they've already been answered), we don't know.
(That said, if it IS just a straight port of the PC game to the Wii, and therefore Yet More Shovelware for that platform, I don't know that I would go advertising the fact.)
tpirfan28
Jun 18 2008, 03:07 PM
The rep from Ludia hasn't visited GR since April.
I did do some research in the threads about the TPIR game...
this post by another user gave some ideas about using the Wii Remote and corresponding with certain events during TPIR, and then
this post by the Ludia rep basically says those were ideas that were already been planned for the remote.
Also, Rich is the only voice in the downloadable version of the game (R's not included :) ). They also mentioned that the CD version was going to have a lot more "glitz" in the game (I think it was unlockable videos). I can't seem to find the exact post...but I'm looking. The preliminary Wii rumors seem to have Bob and Drew involved, but that's just a rumor.
EDIT to add more stuff:
This post from the Ludia rep mentions the DS version...four less game and less speech, and some stuff about the Xbox Live Arcade version.

I'll believe that when I hear it with my own ears. (In other words, no friggin' way.)
Ditto the use of motion controls. There's just no percentage in it for them to waste dev cycles on doing anything but a straight port with VERY MINIMAL motion integration.
I'd love to be wrong - Gawd knows it would make Ludia stand out from the rest of the casual game industry. But having played the Hell's Kitchen game and discovering that it's basically a mashup of Diner Dash and Cake Mania, I suspect I'm not.

Okay, picked up the WoF "Quick Picks", and it's great.
It has cards that you play a full game on (3 rounds and a bonus puzzle). The "Wheel Cards" are wedges of the wheel, and there's a trip space and jackpot space (set amount of $10,000), that you add to the 'wheel' (deck). Also, since you can use the cards how you want, I generally put the $3500 card in the second round, and the $5,000 in the third round. Overall, it's a good rendition, and is just as fun as the spinner types.
Oh, and when you 'spin' the wheel, you call out a number from 1 to 23. You then 'flip' that many cards, so you can see what you passed in your 'spin'. It's a cheap gimmick that works well. You then shuffle after your 'spin'.

The scoreboard/used letter board's pretty spiffy, too. All the wheel values are there, so you just make tally marks under each as you go and add it up at the end. There's also a "Buy a Vowel" column so you can make the appropriate deductions.

1 vs. 100 for the Nintendo DS is finally trickling into stores. I got my copy from Amazon delivered within the past half hour. DSI actually got something somewhat right, for once.
After loading the game, the ActImagine video codec logo showed up on the screen. That right there gave me a glimmer of hope, as that codec has created some great looking animation on other DS titles like Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and Madden 08. (FWIW, Professor Layton gets two huge thumbs up, while I'm glad Madden 08 only cost me $10 new at MicroCenter a few weeks back.)
The game is just like season 2, with the money ladder. The only difference is that you do not get a preview of the question after running out of helps. The animation is better than previous DSI titles like the abysmal Deal or No Deal or any of their card/board game titles. Bob Saget is not pixelated, like Howie was on Deal or No Deal or the game cards and pieces are on DSI's board game compilations. Some of the video shown in the upper screen is repetitive and unnecessary. The questions are not all about pop culture; in my few playings, I've seen 2 questions about current pop culture and I made it down to <10 mob members in each game.
The mini games, 1 vs. 100 Poker and Temptation (Rossi-free!) are crap. In poker, you bet pre-determined increments of money, $1000, $2000, and $5000, on whether you'll get a question right. The rules are the same in Temptation, except you're given just the category.
Bottom line: Is it worth $20? I like 1 vs. 100 enough to say 'yes', despite the useless minigames. As always, YMMV. It's miles better than Deal or No Deal and Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, not that being better than either of those two steaming piles is saying much.
Since there hasn't been much talk about 5th Grader for the DS, I got it from MicroCenter 3 weeks ago USED for $3, after a $10 coupon. 5th Grader is worth $3 at most. Thus, I got my money's worth. ;-) All questions are multiple choice except for the Million Dollar Question. I LOL'ed at how the previous owner never won more than $25K, yet I won the million on my first time out. My DS has told me I am smarter than a 5th grader, just in case 5 years of college wasn't proof enough.

Figured something like this would fit best in this thread rather than a standalone. Walking through Target, I sighted this

The distributor of the PC-CD/console version of the Price is Right game, Ubisoft, has recently
launched a web site. It has a playable version of Punch-A-Bunch (Plinko and Cliffhangers will be added in the coming months). You can win a Wii prize pack or the grand prize of a trip for two to play Plinko at the stage show for $5,000. For me, the best part of the web site is that they use cues from the show as background music - some of them haven't been heard in the clear before.

I was wondering when this site would launch. Last month at the studio, I was watching Rich do the promos in front of a green screen.
I also met a gentleman involved in the marketing of the game, but he wasn't from Ubisoft. I told him that I didn't like the fact that you could only play the demo for 30 minutes. I suggested maybe 30 days would be more appropriate. Turns out he had no control over that, but would pass on the comments to their development team (I'm not holding my breath)
Rich was glad I liked the TPIR game as he put a lot of work into it.

Not on your life. Most people are going to get their fill of a casual game in 30 days.
In that one hour, you should have gotten a sense of what the game was like, you were likely able to play through at least one complete game, and you have more than enough information to decide whether you want to buy it or not.

It wouldn't be completely outside of the realm of possibility (see Hill, Avalon), but if you're going to go to the trouble of reviving a brand name best known for it's association with
Scrabble, are you going to immediately taint it by slapping it on this tripe?

An addendum to my review of 1 vs. 100 for the DS...
Winning the million in the main game is impossible. I was in a 1 vs. 1 situation...for 18 questions. Frustrated, bored, and disenchanted by seeing 2 questions repeated in the span of 18 questions, I conceded and took the virtual half million.
DSI, you did a good job with 1 vs. 100. To make the game impossible to win is as lackadaisical as the lack of randomization on Deal or No Deal.
