I just got the PYL and Match Game DVD games, from boardgames.com. I actually found them to be better than I'd expected!

The PYL game has been talked about previously, so I won't go into detail about that.

The MG DVD kind of combines the three different versions of the 70's-90's. How? Well, all the questions and video footage are from the Rayburn version, scoring is in the form of money (like the '90-'91 version), and only FIVE celebrities participate in the game (like the '98-'99 series). Up to six people can play the game, and all players write down their own answer to all questions played in the game.

There are 25 different games contained on disc, and you choose a specific game by number, using your DVD's remote control. The game I chose to try it out with, featured Brett, Charles, Richard, JoAnne Pflug, and Fannie Flagg.

There are two regulation rounds to the game. The first round consists of two questions, with each match paying $50. After both questions have been played, all players can add to their total in the "Super Match," which is just the "audience match," portion of the TV show. The second round is played like round one, only each match pays $100! After the second round, any ties are broken with one question, and the players who are tied must write down an answer, but they cannot be identical ones. There is a "house rule," that before the game starts, determine the order of players, so that in the event of a tie, one player goes first, followed by the next person going clockwise, and so on.

After a winner is determined, that player gets the chance to play the "Star Match" to try to double his/her earnings. They make it look like a randomizer of celebrity photos picks the star you have to match.

Though video of Gene Rayburn reading the questions is used throughout the game, the audio instructing players what to do is by Todd Newton, who of course hosts the PYL DVD, and is heard (but not seen), on TPIR and Password DVD games!

That would seem to be a little confusing. You see six celebrities on the screen, but you only hear from five of them? What happened to Bart Braverman's response? Or that cute soap star's?

Do they show the full panel at any point?

No. They show stills of the celebrities for that particular game chosen, and Todd Newton introduces them. The game also displays blocks on the screen, showing the answers the stars wrote (though you do see them hold up the card with the answer written on them, and hear their verbal comments as when the episode originally aired).

I'd say that since six dry-erase boards/markers are supplied, you could even do your own in-home MG party with enough people.

While checking the iToys site, to see if any new info about their forthcoming Family Feud electronic game, I saw an illustration for a 1 VS 100 handheld game!

While there was no information available on that, I thought to myself that maybe the expansion cartridges that are supposedly going to be available, will work with both versions.

While watching VH1 overnight ("I Hate My 30s"--cute if uneven show), I saw a Hasbro commercial for the "...5th Grader?" box game. Begins with clips from the show with the theme playing in the background and then cuts to a family playing the game and a little girl saying, "What do you know about 4th Grade Math, Dad?" Dad looks uncomfortable.

It is so rare seeing a spot for a game show licensed game, especially one that is currently on the air. (The "Name That Tune" electronic game and, more recently, the "LMAD" DVD game ads aired long after those shows left the air.)

Was that even commonplace during the original game show heyday of the 70s and 80s? From my years of watching games, the only time I ever saw a plug was when the host or announcer would mention that all contestants receive the game. Jeopardy used to do it well into the late-90s, before they switched to the cash as consolation format.

Nope. Milton Bradley made almost all of them and the view was obviously that the show and the name on the box was all the promotion they needed.
alfonzos
Milton Bradley ran ads for Concentration (I remember this one because the puzzle used in the commercial was "Behind the Eight Ball") and Shenanigans (The theme played as background music) after the shows were canceled.

Amazon.com is now listing a "collectors" set of three of Imagination's Family Feud DVD games, including the forthcoming "Movie" edition, in a tin box. It's supposed to be available soon, for $39.99.

However, there is also a listing for a different collectors set of Imagination DVD games, for the same price, but if you look at the illustration of the container (by clicking the link below), it shows a container listing ten DVD game titles, including most of what's available now, plus What's My Line?, Beat the Clock, and To Tell the Truth among them! In Order to Win is listed as well, which plays like a game show, but isn't based on an actual program.

Small nit: Why is the 2nd edition in the tin, when there is a 3rd edition currently out?

That'll be worth it, considering it's *10* titles (approx. $4 each).

Because it's an easy way to unload unsold stock.

It's a great move , though I can't see why someone would pay $40 when they didn't want to pay $20, regardless of the price=per-gameshow-ratio.

I didn't want to pay $20 for one of these, but I will surely pay double that for nine more.
Modor
And if the games are all lousy, as most people have indicated, you've just wasted another $20 for nine worthless games. What's your gain here?

It'd be the same thing if someone didn't like Domino's Pizza, but thought...Hmm...1 medium is $13.99, but I can get 2 more for only $1.01! What a deal!
clemon79
Fools and their money and all that.

That said, if you like three of the ten enough that you would have purchased them piecemeal, you're ahead on the deal, right?

(but, yes, the slim likelyhood of three of the ten not sucking dog balls is well-taken.)

The online store unclesgames.com is now showing the Silver Anniversary Deluxe WOF game:

Also, Techno Source's website shows a news story regarding it's future AYSTAFG handheld game:

Though you can't enlarge the image shown, it looks like it incorporates a touch-screen, as they did with their Sudoku/Kakaro handheld games.

+1 to the company for including the re-creation of the wheel... -1 for not going the extra step to include the extra wedges.
fostergray82
That actually looks pretty nice, although I would've included more puzzle borders (to suit the changing theme weeks), or a cardboard cutout of the LED border. But that's just my minor cosmetic quibble.

I like the die cut on the box, showing the wheel.

You guys are really going to have to get past this "extra wedges" thing. There are not NEARLY enough people who care to justify the expense. And I always hear people complain like this:
QUOTE
So I bought the WOF game yesterday, and it didn't have the extra wedges! But I'll totally buy the next one they put out, and maybe that one will!

Which should tell you something.
rollercoaster87
I saw it up close in a Borders 2 weeks back, and believe me, that wheel was NOT made of anything resembling a metal.

"Let's take the blue wheel, spray paint it silver, and call it the Silver Anniversary Edition!"

I knew it couldn't be metal when the lighter half of the box was the half with the wheel.

If you really want different configurations on the wheel. Go to this site: http://gameshowuniverse.bravehost.com/gsartwork.html, print out the pictures and tape them to the wheel and you're set!

Now, do we know if those are the correct size to do that natively, or do they need to be resized beforehand?

(Because you are exactly correct. Mount the things on some cardstock (or, even better, print them out on cardstock if your printer can do it), and you are totally good to go. And it's a BETTER solution than the wedges.)

They do have to be a little bit bigger, but it should still look nice.

The cardstock idea looks great, do you know where I could get some?
Joe Mello
I think your typical office supply store has some. I remember doing a project a few years ago and the local Office Max had several forms of paper including card stock.

That's a shame. They should resize the graphics so they're the right size natively; it would be a nice touch. I'm assuming the wheel size hasn't changed across Deluxe versions.
QUOTE

The stuff I use I get at Paper Zone; it's glossy black on one side and matte white on the other. I'm sure Your Local Paperclip Warehouse would have some, though, and likely cheaper. I bet you'd get even better results printing to photo paper and then mounting that on cardstock.

(It's important to be sure that your printer has a reasonably straight path for it to go through...if your printer feeds from the back, you're probably fine, but I wouldn't try running it through a U-shaped path like some of the HP's (and the cassette in my Canon...Epson sucks) have.)

Thank you very much, Joe and Chris, you both have been most helpful. :-)

I'm only putting 24 lb. stock through, and I don't do colored backgrounds or anything, but I've put it through my HP with the U-track, and had no trouble at all.

If I was going to kludge together a Wheel of Fortune Up the Bucket Deluxe, I would go to a Goodwill or thrift store of your choice and convenience, and find a spare WoF Deluxe game. Use the wedges from that and cover them with stickers of whatever text you want. I think one set with all the wedges could have you swimming in all the big money, prizes and other gadgets that the show used, all at once. (Though I admit that the printed out cardstock thing is a great idea too.)

But, really, when you get down to it, does the addition of a $2,500 or "Surprise" wedge really add that much to your enjoyment? After all, you're still playing Wheel of Fortune.

Yeah, but that's paper. The ream of paper I got at Best Buy the other day is 24 lb.

The problem with that is that the current cardboard inserts on the Deluxe WOFs don't have the notches cut out for the wedges to fit into.

(Yeah, you could cut them. But if you're gonna do that, why not print up a bunch of alternate (and historically accurate) Wheels?)

I will admit, the fact that my Wheel home game always topped out at $750 sucked a teeny bit of the fun out of it, even if it provided game balance.

I thought it sounded too good to be true, and now the description at amazon.com states that it is only THREE different DVD games (Family Feud 2nd Edition, LMAD, and Press Your Luck)!

They also describe the tin-boxed set of THREE Family Feud DVD games to consist of the First and Third Editions plus the new Movie Edition, which hasn't come out yet.

While at amazon.com, I also saw that there will be "TV Tie-In" books related to Merv Griffin's Crosswords, coming in October.

Weird, because there's no mistaking the writing on the box, or the logos of all those shows. Plus, though you never can be sure with photos of boxes, the dimensions look right for a huge multi-pack set. Maybe that's going to be a different release, presumably at a higher price (that part always did sound too good to be true).

Here was our Mackey Brothers WOF home-game fix. We had somehow gotten our hands on a toy roulette wheel that had a flipper on it like the "Wheel" wheel, and it had exactly the correct number of spokes on it to be able to do our own wheels. We exactly replicated the wheels from the show, right down to the color and placing of the wedges. It was definitely more exciting than the wheel that came in the box!

Jakks Pacific announced this week that their Plug N Play line will include Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, which will be released in the Spring, 2008.

Their 1 VS 100 should start showing up soon. I've seen one on eBay, and eToys also lists it as "In Stock."

Believe it or not, there will be merchandise based on The Singing Bee! Among some already mentioned, is a DVD game:

I don't know exactly how many of these have been mentioned but this past weekend I saw:

- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader case (looks like a lunchbox) game

-Identity "case" game (small tin) and full-on board game complete with "stage"

-1 vs 100 Board Game (looks like it has a stand up "mob" you can X out to eliminate)

-2 different Deal or No Deal "briefcase" games. They were full-sized briefcases but one was fairly cheap (tin case and plastic handle) and the other was much nicer (higher grade metal for the actual case and a solid metal handle).

"Erm, it looks like the cardboard figurine that was the hula dancer in the last game, the pimp in the game before that, and the gourmet chef in the game before that."
JohnTheGameMan
There has been very little mentioning of the "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" DVD game. It should be out sometime in October but I noticed Amazon is taking pre-orders for the game.
BTW: Where can the "Identity" game be found. I have not been able to find it at either my Toys R Us or Target. I went to the GSN buzz board and someone found the game at an arts and crafts store.
Finally, it may not be a board game itself, but there is a "Deal or No Deal" scratch and play book out now, as well as a book companion to "5th Grader" out in the next month or so.

A book companion? If people read books, they wouldn't have a show.

So where has there been a mention of Identity? I have checked several board game stores and dept stores and they have no listing of it...any info would be appreciated.
Bob Zager
I'd read some reports online that Identity was going to be coming out, and although it is out now, I haven't seen it anywhere yet, myself.

I DID find a listing at Toys R Us Canada website:

http://www.toysrus.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/se...+&nvalue=27

It also lists the "card game," but pictures the same "board game," box.

If I'm correct, this game marks only the second time in Pressman Games' history that the host is pictured on the box--can you guess the only other game show box game from Pressman to feature the show's host on the box?

While on the subject of box games, apparently the new 5th edition Password game from Endless Games is out now. At least it's turned up on eBay, as well as other websites thus far.

Not sure on the host, but I find it interesting that the box referred to it as "The Hit NBC Game Show". I mean, it did all right in December, but I thought it got lower ratings than 1 vs. 100, which at least wins its timeslot on occasion...

Typical home game hype there. It seems to me that Wink's High Rollers home game, for example, also referred to HR as "the new hit TV game show," which it wasn't--and came out before the show had even premiered, at which point there was no way they could possibly have known that anyway.

Which retailer had the "Identity" games? I can't find them in any stores by me, and I've only traced one or the other version to Toys R Us and Sears Canadian-based websites.

Seems unusual that the games--made in U.S. and based on a show produced in U.S.--are not turning up on U.S.-based websites, let alone stores.

Oh, also JayD, did the "Identity," games you saw feature Penn Jillette's picture?

This has to be a first...

This afternoon while at a gas station getting a Deal or No Deal scratcher, I saw the store had 5th Grader keychains for $4 apiece. The keychain is a disc (multiple discs?) enclosed in a plastic case with questions on one side and answers on the other. It was awfully big for a keychain, between 4 and 5 inches in diameter. Each keychain has a different category.

FWIW, the $5 scratcher netted me $10. It's better than spending 8+ hours in a boiling hot studio and getting a ball cap for your suffering.

5 inches might be large. (That's what she said!) 4 inches in diameter is a better estimation on the keychain's size.

While out and about tomorrow, I'll head to the gas station and hopefully snag a URL for the manufacturer since I can't find anything about these keychains.
